This year Kids4Vets was invited for the first time to host a project at the PBS Kids Block Party. The event was hosted on October 21 at the Platte County Community Center and Kids4Vets brought seven student volunteers. Over 400 people attended the event with around 200 being kids.
Our goal with this project was to teach kids the significance of the poppy flower and how it relates to veterans. The poppy is a symbol of remembrance for those who have served and this symbol was brought about from the poem “In Flanders Field” by John McCrae written about World War I. Attendees at the Block Party did poppy rock painting where kids could use paint pens to draw a poppy onto a rock and then keep it to remind them of the importance of the poppy or to give to a family member that served.
This was a very successful event and we are so grateful to have had the opportunity to work with PBS again after the 2017 Daniel Tiger Day.
